PROJECT STATEMENT
CRITIQUE OF THE SITE
1. (From research) Boston’s wastewater management strategy is an outdated combined sewage system. Boston’s is dependent on a singular sewage treatment plant, Deer Island, which cannot handle additional storm water loads. As a result, raw sewage is periodically dumped directly into the Boston Harbor via outfalls.
2. (From site visit) Attempts to reintegrate the greenway parcels into the existing urban fabric through pedestrian circulation failed in two ways:
a. The greenway was planned to work together as a string of parcels with a primary North South axis. However, the current condition is that people cross the greenway in an East West direction with minimal site engagement.
b. By failing to connect to parcels to the urban context and programmatic assets (tourist attractions, public spaces, restaurants, hotels, public transportation and parks)
WHAT
I propose a new, urban infrastructure consisting of five layers
1. Built structures
2. Pedestrian circulation
3. Water diversion
4. Water storage
5. Landscaped holding areas
HOW
o Collect wastewater from surrounding buildings
o Transport water via aqueducts
o Provide maximum pedestrian access
o Store filtered water in built structures
o Allow groundwater recharge through landscaped holding areas
WHY/CONCLUSIONS
o This proposal will relieve Deer Island and provide a more environmentally friendly solution to waste water disposal
o An urban plan focused on pedestrian circulation provides a more enjoyable, walkable, city
o Connect the greenway parcels to surrounding context and resident and tourist activity by providing open air program spaces of a plant market and education station
